Bio

Reuben Johnston is currently pursuing a PhD in Systems Engineering at George Washington University, with dissertation research centered on software security reliability.   Reuben has worked professionally in various embedded electronics and software engineering positions since 2000.  Presently, he is working as a software vulnerability researcher at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and lecturing part-time at the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute.  Reuben was previously employed by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), where he attended George Washington University part-time and earned a master’s in systems engineering.  Prior to working for SAIC, Reuben worked for the U.S. Department of Defense and also moonlighted part-time as a consultant with Key Technologies, Inc.  For his undergraduate education, Reuben attended Lamar University, on multiple academic scholarships, and earned dual bachelor degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.

Security researcher with lead role experience for small teams, and over 17 years of experience designing specifications for, developing, prototyping, integrating, and verifying secure embedded electronics hardware and software systems.  Cyber related expertise in electronic and software system security assessments and related reverse engineering.  Systems engineering expertise in concept of operations, requirements generation, architecture definition, detailed specifications design, integration, and verification for secure embedded electronics systems.  Core competencies for software implementation are in middleware (for integration of electronics and software), as well as embedded and engineering diagnostic applications.  Hardware implementation capabilities are centered on cable, electronic Printed Circuit Board (PCB), and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) logic (using Hardware Description Language, or HDL) design.
